"Jacobean Moderns" is how director Kevin Bennett and I came to think of the denizens of Measure for Measure.
With a tight budget and over 20 costumes, items were begged, borrowed (sincere appreciation to Ms. Sydney Cavanagh and Bard on the Beach) but mostly made or repurposed. The old became new, and the new had the starch removed so that the Downtown East Side (DTES of Vancouver) could come crashing into the courts of "Vienna".
By turns regal, subdued, simple, flashy, distressed, over- and underdone.  Ruffs, high collars and lace inserts mix with polyester, bodysuits, gender went into the blender at times, and a novice's habit was made from a back-lacing Forever 21 dress.
Lit alternately by candle flame and "traditional" stage lighting designed by Graham Ockley and played against the brilliant cardboard set designed by Shizuka Kai the strange becomes familiar over the course of the evening with every actor having another identity.
