Founded in January 2010 by Studio 58 graduates Sean Harris Oliver and Raes Calvert, Hardline Productions emerged from a desire to create raw, edgy theatre which is financially accessible to the public.
Most Hardline productions were designed and executed on minuscule to small budgets, hard work, generosity and occasionally luck substituting where funds were lacking, but as Hardline has grown slowly, so have the budgets.
“(. . .) this crew’s commitment to art goes unquestioned. From the harshness of an industry so dependent on withering outside funding, sprouts a flower of entrepreneurial spirit.”
-Eric Thomas, Theatre Review Consortium

Bug presents gritty realism descending into madness, and blood. Lots of blood. When Dr. Sweet is stabbed the director wanted gouts of blood, soaking his shirt and pants every night. The challenges included a make-up design including blood capsules, removable teeth, and bite marks, cuts and bruises that the actors themselves could apply and re-apply quickly and easily before and during each show, and remove in a space without bathing facilities, as well as clothing that needed to be washed every night to remove blood and water (standing in for gasoline) and end up either looking new (in the case of Dr. Sweet) or old, dirty, and sweaty (Peter & Agnes).

Director Genevieve Fleming wanted historically accurate and realistically dirty/dusty/ gritty costumes, with dirt that could be brushed off visibly onstage leaving a ground, worn, worked, and slept in base. It needed to be applied and reapplied, and it needed to be 100% non-toxic. After a lot a research a secret blend that included dry cocoa powder powder was developed leading one actor to notably remark following dress rehearsal that he thought he was having a stroke as he couldn't understand why he was suddenly smelling chocolate everywhere. Thankfully the smell faded quickly leaving only "dirt" behind.
